Halton Small Business Centre kicks off 2019 Summer Company Program!

2019 Halton Summer Company Participants and Mentors

On July 11th, the Halton Small Business Centre hosted a kick-off event to celebrate and introduce the 2019 Summer Company program participants.  The participants were joined by Halton Region staff, parents, mentors, and Summer Company alumni.

The Summer Company program helps enterprising students between the ages of 15 and 29 to start and run their own summer business.  The program provides hands-on business training and mentoring, up to $1,500 for start-up costs and another payment of $,1500 for successfully completing the program.  The Halton Small Business Centre coordinates the program locally, and delivers it with the support of experienced business advisors from the community.  This year, the Halton Small Business Centre is working with seven students who submitted exceptional business plans and solid cash flow projections.

The event featured remarks from Economic Development Director, John Davidson who provided words of encouragement and greetings on behalf of Halton Regional Chair, Gary Carr.  The event also featured one of the past Summer Company graduates and success story, Matthew Sadecki, owner of Ives Park Solutions.  Mathew shared his experiences from the Summer Company program and provided advice to this year’s participants.  Mathew also spoke about the program’s beneficial mentoring and training, and the valuable opportunity to share challenges and successes with his fellow young entrepreneurs.

Our Summer Company mentors are invaluable to the program.  They include local professionals from the community who guide and coach the students through their entrepreneurship journey. This year’s program mentors include Mits Kantaria from ArcPro Media Inc., Maralyn Ellis from Futures Found, Harpal Dasord from BDC, Ellezandro Noronha from RBC, Anil Basu from RBC, and Nila Mohibi from Sunlife Financial.

The highlight of the event was our current participants who shared details about their unique businesses and what they hope to accomplish over the summer.  This year’s Summer Company cohort includes a diverse mix of businesses serving the Halton community and beyond.

Just previous to the Summer Company kick-off event, the students participated in “Staples Day” at  Staples, 2460 Winston Churchill Blvd, Oakville.  This event helps Summer Company participants showcase their summer businesses and gain publicity and potential customers.

The event provided an opportunity for students to pitch their business services and products to customers of the office supply store. Program participants handed out flyers and business cards, sold products, and even signed-up customers to their e-mail databases.

The students brought their creativity and marketing skills to promote their businesses and attract customers.  Participant Callum Sheedy, Glass Iris Media set up a television on his tradeshow table to run a video loop advertising his media production company and sample work.  Other participants like, Anne Fang of Easy Eye-Wellness and Wenyuan Tong of Future Flourish Soaps, filled their tables with their products and samples for customers to purchase or test.

It was a great day for the community to come out and support our Summer Company participants!
