On June 24, 2013, at the Gold Quill Awards Gala hosted by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) at its annual conference in New York City, Halton Region was presented with a Gold Quill Award of Excellence for our social media initiatives aimed at Small Business.
The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is a global network of communication professionals committed to improving organizational effectiveness through strategic communication. Established in 1970, IABC serves more than 14,000 members in 70 countries. IABC’s Gold Quill Awards program benchmarks communication excellence worldwide.
Submitting the entry provided us with a way to take stock of our original goals and objectives, review where we’ve come over the past few years, evaluate our progress and share our results with an international panel of judges. As Argyle Communications President Daniel Tisch posted recently about the awards program, “The best way to raise your game is to learn from what others are doing, and to get feedback from senior professionals.”
What began as a pilot project within Halton Region, has developed into a whole new way of doing business for the Halton Region Small Business Centre. We are now using social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook and this WordPress blog to strengthen linkages, build connections and reach and engage an ever-growing segment of the community. Within our division, we’ve also expanded the program to include separate social media channels for Tourism, including Pinterest.
Sandra Nuhn, Manager Entrepreneurship and Innovation, accepted the Gold Quill Award at the gala dinner and she did so on behalf of everyone who connects with us online and also those who use the Small Business Centre’s online resources to grow their business.
When you are in business or sharing vital business information, it is important to communicate in an effective way and used strategically, social media can be an amazing tool. We continue to explore new and innovative ways to use social media in our daily operations and would love to hear from you on how you think we are doing and how we can build on the solid foundation we now have in place.
