Organizing Your Home Office

At the Halton Region Small Business Centre, we see a lot of home based businesses.  Running a business from home is not an easy task.  One of the keys to productivity in your home office is organization.  You want to feel inspired and ready to work when you enter your office!  Inspiration comes from what surrounds you.  If your home based business is dark, dingy and messy, that can have an impact on how you feel and how much time you spend in your office.

Running a business from home can be very stressful.  It is convenient but there can also be a lot of distractions.  You want to use your time effectively and organizing your office might be the last thing on your mind.  You may not have clients dropping by but that is no excuse.  Your home office is a reflection of your business and it should be clutter free and organized.

Consider the following tips:

– Make a to do list and then stick to your schedule

– Keep your active files close to you

– Have an in basket

– Use different coloured file folders for quick identification

– Scan documents and be paper free

– Only touch a piece of paper once (File the paper or deal with it)

– Stop making piles that you have to constantly move out of the way

– Make sure you have good lighting or natural light in your office

There does come a time when you need to destroy old files.  Review these helpful guidelines from Canada Revenue Agency.

When you start your day in the office, make sure you set aside the first half hour or so to organize your day so that you will be productive.  Part of that organization should include moving files around and out of the way to make room to work.  If you are organized you will be able to totally focus on accomplishing the tasks for the day.  Your time in the office will be more enjoyable.  When you love being in your office your business will excel.
