- Between 1999 and 2009, the number of self-employed females increased by 13 per cent compared with 10 per cent for men. In 2010, over 900,000 of the 2.6 million self-employed workers inCanadawere women (Statistics Canada, 2010).
- Today, women retain ownership in 47 per cent of Canada’s 1.6 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and majority ownership in 16 per cent of Canadian SMEs (IndustryCanada, 2010).
- According to the Taskforce for Women’s Business Growth, women-owned businesses represent significant untapped potential to expand the Canadian economy.
