Spring is in the air and the Halton Small Business Centre is gearing up for another exciting summer with the Summer Company Program. Applications are coming in daily from enterprising students looking to take advantage of up to $3,000 available from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to start and run their own summer business. Rather than applying for traditional summer jobs, students have the opportunity to create their own job by starting their own business. They may even employ others!
Once an application is accepted, students are eligible to receive up to $1,500 to put towards start-up costs and up to $1,500 upon successful completion of the program.

In addition to the award money, students receive business training and mentoring through our Small Business Centre and a group of local business leaders who volunteer their time to help the student-run businesses succeed. Bi-weekly mentor meetings provide an opportunity for participants and mentors to review the progress of each business and solve any problems as they arise. These meetings become a real highlight of the summer for the student business owners. The students learn so much at these meetings not only from the mentors but also from each other. We are always so impressed by the creative ideas the students come up with to help each others’ business grow!
So what makes a good summer business?
Generally businesses that can get up and running quickly make a good choice for the program. While earning a profit is not mandatory for successful completion of the program, we are looking for students with a solid plan for success and a clear dedication to the running the business. We’ve worked with students running traditional summer businesses such as lawn care, window washing, boat detailing, and driveway sealing along with more unique concepts including web design, real estate assistant, tea parties, catering, dog walking and cemetery plot maintenance! Some students choose to close the business at the end of the summer while others may choose to run the business on a smaller scale while they go back to school in the fall.
